MasterCard "Signage" Requirements

February 14, 2002: MasterCard has issued additional regulations about the displaying of sign, decals, or images on websites. They are concerned that regional debit card acceptance decals (STAR, SHAZAM, PULSE, and others) are leading consumers to believe that MasterCard cards can only be used along with the local debit cards.

Here are some of the situations that MasterCard wishes to avoid:

  • When the regional symbols are displayed over the MasterCard symbol.

  • When the regional symbol is larger than the MasterCard symbol.

  • When MasterCard is displayed next to the regional symbol, while other national brands (e.g., Visa, Amex, Discover) are displayed separately, conveying that acceptance of those cards is independent but acceptance of MasterCard is dependent upon being combined with the regional symbol.
