The Complete E-Commerce Guide
Author: Janice Reynolds
Rating:

Pros:

  • Filled with details galore, covers everything from A to Z
  • Excellent book for intermediate and experienced web-based business owners
  • Includes reference links to websites

Cons:

  • Mostly too technical for the beginner

Ever seen 3Com’s commercial where this network savvy guy tries to explain to a business owner how to setup a network for their business? Rather humorous, I think. If you haven’t seen it, you no doubt will. For those of you who have you’ll know what I’m talking about. At any rate this commercial came to mind as I was reading this book. I am quite a bit tech savvy, but to be honest I’m not one to read heavy technical books.

Don’t get me wrong the book is jam packed with loads of details so if you had a question about host connectivity you could easily find the answer in this book. Along with most all of your other e-commerce related questions. The first few chapters went real slow, in fact I skimmed some of them. A few of the chapters did interest me though, but basically this book is meant for those who already have a background in e-commerce. Some of the information in the book I did not agree with and was questionable, but for the most part the author knew what she was talking about.

The book has a total of 18 chapters, those topics are:

1 – The E-Commerce Phenomenon
2 – Design Your Site
3 – Let’s Build It!
4 – Server Hardware
5 – Redundancy
6 – Connectivity
7 – Security
8 – Software
9 – E-Commerce Software
10 – Quality Assurance
11 – Web Site Maintenance and Management
12 – What Are the Costs?
13 – Consultants and Vendors
14 – Web Hosting Services
15 – Marketing a Web Site
16 – Customer Service
17 – Logistics and Order Fulfillment
18 – The Future

Overall, the information content was very impressive and is best suited for those of you who are big “techno geeks” in e-commerce. You’ll find this to be a valuable resource for you. If you have a background in e-commerce already and want to learn ways to making your web-based business more successful this would be a good book for you, also.
